I came up with some interesting ideas for this project. I knew I would want to choose something creative and it would be a fun learning experience. Learn French I thought about learning French because I have always loved the language and wanted to learn it in high school but I took Spanish instead. I believe it is a great language to learn and it would be helpful to speak it when I travel to France (hopefully soon). I have some French songs on my iPod but I feel my project should have more creativity and art. Juicing I considered choosing to live a more healthy lifestyle. I love fresh fruit smoothies, acai bowls but I haven't jumped on the green juice/smoothie bandwagon. I thought about getting a juicer and having fresh veggie and fruit juice frequently throughout each day and monitor my results like if I am sleeping better, more energetic, less tired, better skin, etc. However, I want my project to be something I have not done before and I am already excited about smoothies so I'll pursue another idea. *Create a Quilt* After thinking of all my ideas, I decided to show off my creative and artistic side by learning how to create a Quilt. I've never done anything like this before. I tried my hand at sewing many years ago and I was too impatient to learn. Making a quilt will be a good challenge for me and I cannot wait to get quilt ideas/patterns from Etsy and Pinterest, sewing tutorials from YouTube, some sewing tips from my mom and using pictures to document the progress of my quilt. I have always wanted to have a nice warm quilt of my own and I feel this project will be a fun and exciting challenge. Some questions I would consider for this 20% Project: 1. How much fabric do I need to make a quilt? 2. Are there different quilt patterns and sizes for beginners? 3. What website blogs or videos will be the best tutorials for me? 4. Would it be helpful to join a quilt club? 5. What pattern should I choose for my quilt? 6. How do I turn photographs into quilt patchwork squares? 7. Do you just use needle, scissors, and thread, or are there other tools? 8. Where do I buy fabrics and materials? 9. How much do the materials cost? 10. What kind of thread do I use? After I watched this video, I still felt I am a person who is a visitor of the internet and technology. It was interesting about the point he made about residents and visitors having the same technology but it depends how much it is being used and the purpose of the technology usage. I say I am a visitor of technology because I do not go on the internet too much, I only have a Facebook and to my friends' annoyance, I have no Twitter, SnapChat, Instagram, Pinterest, and whatever other social media sites I do not know. My phone is located in my purse most of the time throughout the day unless I am using it to check or send necessary emails.
I've never thought too much on what type of technology user I am until seeing this video. I like the point he made about both visitor and residents having the same technology skill it's just a matter of how much they use or what they use it for. I would imagine I am a resident because I go on social media a lot to talk to friends and go around on news articles. However, I am a visitor in the sense I go on social media and if not on social media I only use technology for a specific purpose. I would like to find interesting blogs to follow however to find new teaching ideas! Before I viewed this video I thought of myself as being very tech savvy and having an online presence, but now I’m started to second guess that. Starting the class and creating the accounts to get an online presence is making me start to think that I need to develop it. Dr. White talks about how most people just check in and take from the internet when they need it. I use youtube all the time to figure out how to make things, cook things and build things. The last thing that I looked up was how to build a bike surfboard rack. After I used the information I didn’t stick around and discuss like Dr. White suggest when you are a resident online. Personally I feel that being a resident online is really a time suck. Michael Wesch describes the need for critical thinking, I could not agree more! Today our students are going to face many different challenges outside of school, I want to prepare them for that. As a teacher I feel it is my job to get my students ready for some of the challenges that they will face outside of school. Wesch describes the major impact that media can have in my students lives. Without the ability to think critically, my students would be disadvantaged and more susceptible to the ads they are viewing on a daily basis. Wesch describes critical thinking as setting up a filter between the “blast of media”. Wesch also suggest that critical thinking is not enough for our students but that our students need to be able to harness the power of media and connectedness of our current society, however I disagree. I feel that if students have the ability to think critically and problem solve, then mastering the uses of media will follow. |
