I agree with Google and their hiring criteria as it has helped them get to where they are but I believe that what I have done in clinical practice has not prepared them for a job at Google. It would be great if I was a Google recruiter on the side of me being a history teacher but it is not my job to be preparing them for Google. It was interesting to read how grades, transcripts and having a degree does not amount to anything at Google and what counts is what you can do with the knowledge you have. It kind of puts down those who learned how to code by going to school and was not self-taught the ways of coding. I understand Google wants employees who can use their knowledge for the benefit of the company but Google is a popular search tool for students and Google should encourage education whether it is going to college or from learning on their own. At a high school level, it seems the abilities are not being taught yet they expect the teachers to have a system in place where they can assess students' ability to lead, learn on the fly, problem solve, step in, etc.
I know not everyone wants to work at Google and if they do, I hope they will find success in the company. However, Google's job criteria for certain qualities makes me wonder if all employers are looking for similar qualities and attributes as well. If they are, how will the students be hired if they do not qualify to work for Google or other companies. What will their alternative(s) be? I feel teachers need to help prepare and assess students' skills of problem solving, critical thinking, collaborating with others, ability to receive constructive criticism, be a leader, and ask high level questions and these skills will help them be successful in their future in college and/or the work force, Google or not.
