EDSS 530 Wagner Chapter 6 Renee Marquis 3/2/15
In Chapter 6 of the Global Achievement Gap, Wagner discusses the learning environment of schools that speak to the minds of the students in school today. These schools have begun to close the achievement gap and one school in particular is High Tech High of San Diego county. High Tech High is a model school for other schools because it focuses on implementing Wagner's 7 survival skills (Chapter 1) in their daily lessons and activities. I like how High Tech High tests the students on how they can apply the content to situations and experiences rather than handing them a multiple choice test that only measures their memorization skills and nothing else. This form of testing does not prepare the students for the "real world" but the curriculum of HTH can and does prepare their students. The education system needs to move away from the old rigid way of teaching and design curriculums that focus on the students' needs. Reading this book helped me learn a lot about teaching in the 21st century. I believe it is important for all educators to read this book so they can begin implementing Wagner's 7 survival skills into their curriculum and lessons.
